Cassette tapes are making a comeback. As with all things ‘90s, they’re currently trending and Taylor Swift has embraced the revival, and released Lover, her most recent album, on the old-school musical medium, sold at — where else — Urban Outfitters.
Available online for $19.98, the Lover tape features the album's signature colorful artwork, and comes packaged in a clear box.
However, if you're hoping to get your hands on this one, you will have to do a bit of waiting. As noted on Urban Outfitter's website, the tape is currently on backorder until September 6. But, like all things vintage, the wait is definitely worth it, especially as Lover's romantic, cozy vibes do fit the tape format as perfectly as those butterfly clips do with your crop top.
If Taylor has inspired you to hop on this trend, you'll likely have to do some digging to find the perfect accompanying tape player. Luckily, thrift stores are full of boomboxes and personal tape players in perfect working order, and stores like Urban Outfitters and Target also offer brand new players. Just don't forget to add a few Lisa Frank stickers to your new tape buddy.
Of course, Taylor isn't the only pop star making their way into the cassette tape game. Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande have all released their work on tapes in the past, and recently, it was even announced that a collection of tracks from Hannah Montana would be making their way to another revived medium — vinyl record.
Whether you're jamming to the new T. Swift on your streaming service of choice or rocking out to a tape, it should come as no surprise that Lover is a major success. According to *Billboard Taylor’s seventh album officially earned the biggest week for any album since, well, Reputation, and it’s been widely praised by critics and fans alike. If you’re as obsessed as we are, now you have a new (or is it vintage?) way to enjoy the 18-song journey all over again — no iPhone or Spotify required.
