A new Rolling Stone article details the last days of the late-Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins. The interview includes family and friends who claim the drummer expressed discomfort about the grueling nature of the band's tour schedule.

Among those interviewed were Pearl Jam drummer, Matt Cameron and Red Hot Chilli Peppers Drummer, Chad Smith and Sass Jordan, Hawkins former boss and longtime friend. They claimed that Hawkins had brought up his concerns with Foo Fighters lead singer, Dave Grohl and the two had a deep conversation about the matter.

“He had a heart-to-heart with Dave and, yeah, he told me that he ‘couldn’t fucking do it anymore’—those were his words,” Cameron said. “So I guess they did come to some understanding, but it just seems like the touring schedule got even crazier after that.”

The report also includes claims of a December 2021 incident when Hawkins is said to have lost consciousness on a plane in Chicago. (Responding to Rolling Stone, a representative of the Foo Fighters denied that the Hawkins lost consciousness on the plane). “He just said he was exhausted and collapsed, and they had to pump him full of IVs and stuff,” Smith said. “He was dehydrated and all kinds of stuff.” Smith claimed that Hawkins later told him, “I can’t do it like this anymore.”

Smith continued: “That was one of the straws that broke the camel’s back. After that, he had a real important heart-to-heart with Dave and the management. He said, ‘I can’t continue on this schedule, and so we’ve got to figure out something.’”

“The fact that he finally spoke to Dave and really told him that he couldn’t do this and that he wouldn’t do it anymore, that was freeing for him,” an anonymous colleague and friend of Hawkins added. “That took fucking balls. That did take a year of working up the guts to do.”

The Foo Fighters 2022 tour was set to span over the course of several months, with nearly 60 shows being on the books for this year alone. These dates come after the band completed around 40 shows last year. All remaining shows were canceled, including a Grammy performance, after the unexpected death of Hawkins on March 25 in Bogotá, Colombia.

Though the drummer's official cause of death remains unknown, according to Colombian authorities at the time, traces of 10 different substances were found in the drummer's system, including, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, opioids and THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. Following this, an article from Semana, a prominent Colombian magazine, reported that unnamed forensic scientists found that Hawkins had an enlarged heart, weighing 600 grams, and that traces of heroin, the drug in which Hawkins suffered addiction from for many years, was also found in his system.

Esquire has reached out to the Foo Fighters representatives for comment.
