Target Is Reviewing its Policy for Political Contributions After Capitol Riots
Target Corp. has joined a growing list of major corporations taking action to address their political affiliations following unprecedented events last week at the United States Capitol.
According to multiple reports this weekend, the big-box retailer is one of several large firms, including CVS Health Corp. and FedEx, reviewing their political giving as a chorus of U.S. and global leaders call for President Donald Trump to be removed from office after he incited a mob of his supporters to storm the Capitol in protest of the 2020 presidential election results.

“Target’s decision-making body regarding financial support of political activities consists of a subset of the Executive Leadership Team that is responsible for balancing our business interests with other considerations that are important to our team members, guests, shareholders, or other stakeholders,” reads a statement on Target’s website describing its political giving. “This body reports to the Nominating and Governance Committee of the Board of Directors at least twice per year. Target may provide financial support to political candidates, political parties, or ballot initiatives through two separate channels: TargetCitizens PAC, which is funded through the voluntary contributions of our eligible team members, and the use of general corporate funds where permitted by law.”
FN has reached out to Target for additional comment.
As reported by Forbes and other outlets, several large organizations — including Marriott International, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Commerce Bancshares and Citibank — told political newsletter Popular Information this weekend that they will stop donating to any member of Congress who objected to the certification of the Electoral College vote for President-elect Joe Biden. Meanwhile, Bank of America, Ford Motor Co. and AT&T said they will take recent events into consideration before making future donations.
Following what has been widely deemed an attack on democracy incited by President Trump last week, multiple social media networks, including Twitter and Facebook, have permanently removed Trump from their platforms. What’s more, this week, Democrats have been taking steps to make him the first President to be impeached twice.
