Fake tans are a magical thing. When you get one, you practically wake up glowing, and the best part is that you don’t have to worry about harmful UV rays, sunburn, or skin cancer. If you choose to tan at home, you can get your glow on whenever you like, even if it’s the dead of winter.
Fake tans do have a downside, though: they can really mess up your bedding. Most brands recommend you let your tan develop overnight, and since many come with a bronzing agent to make you look tan immediately, it can stain and smear your sheets and your clothes. Chances are you’ll wake up with an imprint of your body sleeping next to you. Where’s the Tide?
After Tan Co. is a company determined to save your sheets — and your favorite outfits. They’ve developed a line of bamboo fabric post-tan attire and bedding so you don’t have to do a load of laundry the morning after a tan. It’s pretty genius, especially for those of us who always turn to spray tans for big events like prom, graduation, weddings, and parties. It’s also great for people who put off doing laundry until absolutely necessary … not that I have any experience with that.
I’m a big fan of the spray tan, and after my most recent stint in the booth, I decided give After Tan Co. a try. I have white sheets and a mostly-white duvet cover on my bed, which is not exactly ideal for post-tan snoozing. I always sleep in sweats and a long-sleeved dark top, but I’m a sweaty sleeper (gross, I know) and tend to wake up with bronze smudges on my sheets in the AM.
Many tan instructions recommend you wear something loose and dark to your tanning session so you don’t smear your new glow while it’s developing. If you want a dedicated garment for tanning, try After Tan Co.’s Bamboo Maxi Dress. It’s made of soft, stretchy fabric and has thicker straps to help protect your tan from those pesky seatbelt or purse strap marks. It even has built-in fabric bra cups, which didn’t work for me but might be great for someone else who likes a little more coverage. Since you’re not supposed to wear a bra after a spray tan, it makes sense to add that little detail, but the dress isn’t a necessary purchase. If you’ve got a black maxi dress in your closet, you’re good to go.
The most innovative product is the Bamboo Sheet Protector. At first, I worried it wouldn’t work for my king-size bed, but then I realized that it’s actually a sleeping bag-style cocoon that works for any mattress, not a set of sheets. You just tuck the ends into your mattress, then open up the snaps on each side, hop in, and re-snap! The Sheet Protector is black, made of bamboo fabric that’s cool and comfortable to sleep in, and roomy, so you’re not squished in a tiny sleeping bag all night. I’m the most high-maintenance sleeper in the world and I slept a full eight hours in this thing without complaint.
After Tan also offers protection for your favorite pillow. All you have to do is slip the Pillow Protector over your pillow and you’re done! It stayed in place all night, no matter how much I tossed and turned.
The morning was a lot easier with my new After Tan bedding. After waking up and unsnapping the cocoon, I just pulled it off my bed and tossed it in the laundry basket, my bedding intact and spotless, just like my tan.
