  • Real Housewives alum Tamra Judge revealed she’s getting her breast implants removed due to autoimmune issues.

  • She’s previously complained of uncomfortable symptoms on social media, attributing them to her implants.

  • Judge’s symptoms align with breast implant illness. Though it is not an officially recognized medical diagnosis, ongoing research supports its existence.

Real Housewives alum Tamra Judge is getting her breast implants removed. Her decision comes after that of other celebs like Chrissy Teigen and Ashley Tisdale, who recently did the same.

For Judge, 52, it’s a health-related choice. She shared the news on her Instagram Story Tuesday, per People, and said “autoimmune issues” influenced her to say “bye bye boobies.”

In the Story, she asked followers to share their explant experiences, and some promised that she would feel “free” after the surgery. “I can’t wait!” Judge wrote. “Tired of being tired and inflamed.” In a later slide, she said that if it wasn’t for her health issues, she “probably wouldn’t rush to have them removed,” but admitted that she’s “so over having large breast[s] that seem to get bigger with age.”

Judge didn’t get into symptom specifics, but has previously detailed struggles with joint pain as well as gut- and sinus-related symptoms, attributing them to her implants.

Those symptoms align with what’s commonly referred to as breast implant illness (BII), which isn’t recognized as an official medical diagnosis. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledges that its symptoms “may be associated” with silicone implants, but states that further research is necessary to better understand the relationship.

Multiple studies, including one from the International Journal of Epidemiology and one from the Annals of Plastic Surgery, have found that silicone implants were linked to autoimmune problems in some women, concluding that people with implants are more likely to experience them. The latter study found that those who got their implants removed experienced significant relief from uncomfortable symptoms.

The FDA currently hosts a database for reports of BII symptoms, and as of August 2020, 3,577 cases have been accounted for—49% report fatigue, 25% report brain fog and joint pain, and 18% report inflammation.

In 2015, Judge told People that she’d undergone five breast augmentations since her 20s, including a separate explant surgery. She got her first lift after having her first child, and implants after having her third “to fill in the extra skin.” She later got a reduction, then a removal, and then replaced the implants shortly thereafter.

“When they were big in the ‘90s, I loved them!” she said at the time. “And then, it’s a lifestyle thing I guess, as you get older you don’t want those big giant boobs.”
