Despite 80 degree temps at the Dolby Theater in sunny Los Angeles, California, the leading men took to the red carpet in too-hot, velvet tuxedos — “I’m sweating!” actor Eddie Redmayne exclaimed, in his Alexander McQueen velour jacket with wool trousers. Redmayne, who’s nominated for best actor in a leading role for The Danish Girl, has sported similar looks in the past: just last year he wore a cozy Burberry velour suit to the 2015 Golden Globes awards, and before that, a brown corduroy Hugo Boss ensemble to the SAG awards in 2013. Similar to Redmayne, songwriter Jimmy Napes also wore a velvet jacket to the awards, but in emerald green (a standout color on the carpet for women this season)! The songwriter with singer Sam Smith are nominated for their popular song “Writings on the Wall” in the James Bond film Skyfall.

Fashion month just wrapped up and with it, Kanye West’s attempts to take over the fashion industry go on the back burner (if only because there aren’t any places to photograph him every day anymore). Earlier this year, Kim Kardashian, his wife, excitedly tweeted about her new look for 2015, masterminded by Kanye. But what about the his own style? Well, it seems like Kanye has also been working on something different for himself this year. The main component? Velvet! Yes, that fabric of Hot Topic goth dresses and heavy antique curtains that has both seduced and repelled us is now aiming to make a comeback into the mainstream on the back of the multi-faceted rapper. It all started at the Grammy Awards when he wore a black velvet suit to walk the red carpet, switched into a wine velvet tracksuit for a solo performance, then changed into a different black velvet blazer to perform with Rihanna and Paul McCartney. It’s obvious he loves this fabric, as he wore it to pretty much every fashion week event this season. We dig it, honestly, velvet is very regal, and if anyone can bring it back, leave it to Yeezy. He is Yeezus after all.
