Cool Ways to Use Greek Yogurt

Here at The Daily Meal, we're always looking for new and creative ways to do the obvious. Sometimes that's a new twist on an old recipe, and other times it's when we figure out a new use for one of our favorite pieces of equipment. The best, though, is when we can come up with creative and unique ways to use a common ingredient or pantry staple in new ways.

Like Greek yogurt, for example. That's one ingredient that, before now, we only thought to enjoy for breakfast, but it can be added to a handful of recipes to make them more delicious and, well, better. There's so much more to Greek yogurt than its customary uses, and it has a place in so many different recipes beyond the obvious ones like tzatziki sauce or a granola parfait.

Did you know that you can use Greek yogurt to create a creamy, delicious - and healthy - blue cheese dressing? Or that the breakfast staple can also play a role in tenderizing and flavoring your oven-fried chicken? We bet you never thought to use it as a base for your caramelized onion dip, but when you do, you'll see that you get the same, flavorful dip and with half the calories than you would with mayonnaise or sour cream.

Thankfully for us, someone did think about using Greek yogurt outside of its usual purposes. Chobani yogurt, one of the leading producers of the dairy product, has come up with a handful of recipes, from soup to nuts, which include Greek yogurt in the list of the ingredients. You'll see that these recipes aren't just fun ways to use Greek yogurt in unusual ways, but that in each of them, it adds value to in a number of different, and delicious, ways.

Oven-Fried Chicken
Some say the best way to marinate fried chicken is in a buttermilk batter, which has acidic components that make the meat tender and flavorful. Unfortunately for those who try to cut calories by "oven-frying," buttermilk doesn't always work. This recipe uses Greek yogurt mixed with mustard, garlic, and seasonings, so that there's not only acid to break down the chicken and make it juicy, but added flavor from the yogurt and mustard.

Perfect Pancakes
What's your definition of the perfect pancake? If you're like most people, it probably includes the word "moist." Chobani figured out how to make their perfectly moist pancakes with the help of a little vanilla-flavored Greek yogurt. Paired with fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup they are, indeed, the perfect pancakes.
