Tragic: Manhattan Nanny Kills Two Children in Her Care

There are some parenting stories that you never want to report, or even hear about. Last night while I was engrossed in homework help, the news switched from the wild upcoming weather to a news story that was unfolding.

Two children were reportedly found stabbed in a posh apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Police also found a nanny with a self-inflicted knife wound to her neck.

Shortly later, we were told the grim and horrendous news: a mother came home around 5:30 p.m. and found the horrific scene of her two of her three children bleeding to death from multiple stab wounds in the bathtub and the nanny nearby.

When the mother took the 3-year-old out to run errands, the nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, 50, stayed behind with the 2-year-old boy Leo and 6-year-old girl Lucia, and stabbed them both. She then stabbed herself. The children's father is Harvard grad Kevin Krim, CNBC's general manager of digital content and the mother, Marina Krim is believed to be a pediatrician.

The children were pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital shortly after. Ortega is in critical condition.

Neighbors describe the blood-curdling scream when Krim and the building's super found the children:

"He's screaming at the top of his lungs," He said, 'The kids are dead! The kids are dead! And the nanny has something sticking out of her throat!' "

Mrs. Krim was seen clinging on to her 3-year-old child and screaming inconsolably while getting into a police car. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

As of now, there is no indication that Ortega had any prior mental or emotional problems. The family was very close to her and even went to visit her family in the Dominican Republic over the summer. Earlier yesterday, Mrs. Krim wrote on her blog about how cute and lively her children were, "I am very proud that the 3 kids absolutely love to play together and never seem to get bored at home. They are constantly thinking up fun things to do in the house."

All over NYC today, parents are naturally disturbed by this horrendous incident and there are those media outlets that will use this tragedy as an opportunity to discuss if hiring a nanny to watch your kids is a good idea, which is revolting. This could have very easily been a teacher or daycare worker instead of a nanny. No one would ever imagine that anything like this would happen to their children. It was an insane act by an unstable and delusional person.

We will likely learn more as the days go by as to what, if anything set Ortega over the edge and caused her to murder the children.

Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this tragedy.
