Are You the Type to Be Attracted to Opposites or to People like You? Here's How to Tell

by Gena Kaufman

Ever wonder why some people seem to date people who are an awful lot like them, while others go for their total opposites? We don't all follow the same pattern, and there's some science behind why.

According to brain anthropologist Helen Fisher, whether or not you're drawn to people like you or completely the opposite depends on your brain type and which chemicals are dominant in your system. Obviously, most of us don't know if we have higher levels of serotonin or dopamine (or honestly, what those words even mean), but there are personality traits associated with each time that you might recognize. You probably seek out your own kind if:

* You have an active dopamine system, meaning you are reward-driven, impulsive, and easily bored.

* You have a seratonin-dominant system, meaning you're more risk averse and sociable, tend to follow rules, and are habit-driven.

You probably fall for opposites if:

* You have a testosterone-dominant system (note: this isn't only relevant for men), meaning you're analytical, competitive, and emotionally contained.

* You have high estrogen and oxytocin levels, meaning you are empathetic, nurturing, and introspective.

(The latter two groups tend to be drawn to each other.)

Which brain type do you think you are? And do you tend to be attracted to guys who are like you personality-wise? Or total opposites?
