A police officer's job is to help innocent people, but sometimes suspects need help, too.
Florida mom Jessica Robles was caught shoplifting over $300 worth of groceries from a Publix grocery store. When Police Officer Vicki Thomas confronted her and asked why she walked out without paying, she got a response that blew her away.
"She just filled up the grocery cart and she just walked out, which shocked me, and I asked her, 'Why?'" Thomas told WBSVN. "She said, 'My children were hungry.' And that immediately impacted me."
"My grandchildren flashed before my eyes," Thomas continued. "I knew at that time what I was going to do. I knew I was going to buy her groceries."
Thomas went back into the store and bought $100 worth of food for Robles, who burst into tears when she saw what the officer had done for her.
Thomas gave the woman a misdemeanor, since she had no prior convictions, and even gave her a ride home since she didn't have a car.
"Arresting her wasn't going to solve the problem with her children getting hungry," she said.
This act of kindness has resulted in even more good deeds. Offers of food and money have poured in from the community, and Robles was even hired by a local business owner who heard about her story.
If you're ever intimidated by or wary of police officers, just remember Officer Thomas' selfless actions, and know that there are some amazing cops out there going above and beyond the call of duty.
