Ariana Grande pulled off wearing a voluminous Giambattista Valli gown on her petite frame. The petite girl that she is, it would be easy for Ariana Grande to get lost in a piece of clothing. Amal Clooney wears Giambattista Valli. Photos, from left to right: Splash News, Hollywood Reporter, Pacific Coast News When Rihanna stepped onto the red carpet at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards this past February, she wasn’t dressed in leather or chains—near-requisites for the one awards show that welcomes daring on its red carpet. Instead, she chose a frothy, gargantuan, empire-waisted pink poof from Giambattista Valli’s most recent haute-couture collection. “Giambattista knows women,” explains Roopal Patel of Roopal Patel Consulting, a New York-based agency that advises retailers and fashion brands.
Amidst all the over-the-top trends that emerged during fashion month— think bejeweled headphones, face jewelry, and Looney Tunes characters— a quieter change was taking place on an often overlooked part of the body often in fashion: the arms. This was popular in Victorian times, characterized by a voluminous detail near the shoulder, which tapers down into the wrist—you know, it looks like a leg of mutton, and if you don’t know what a mutton means, it’s a lamb! The mutton continued to make an appearance on runways in London, at Simone Rocha, in Milan at Marni and Jil Sander, and in Paris at Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton, but it’s not the only shape that designers have in mind for us next season. The extra-long sleeve, one that’s four to five inches longer than your finger tips, the one that makes you feel the coziest when you hide your arms inside it, and maybe you pretend you are a ghost with the sleeves hanging limply over your hands, was also a major contender this season, showing up in the collections of everyone from The Row, to Giorgio Armani, to Stella McCartney.
It must be said that when Rihanna walked in (late, as per her wont) to the Grammys in a voluminous pink Giambattista Valli Couture gown that almost every other outfit that had previously traipsed the red carpet became obsolete. It was definitely one of thosered carpet moments to remember . Yahoo Style caught up with her stylist and fashion guru, Mel Ottenberg , to discuss the lengths he had to go to secure that frock and why the Maison Margiela Artisanal collection is magical. Yahoo Style: That dress, wow.
