Taco Bell voluntarily recalled 2.3 million pounds of seasoned beef on Friday after a customer found a metal shaving in a menu item, the company announced.
One hundred percent of the affected beef has been removed and discarded as of Monday, according to a company news release. The beef in question was originally sent to Taco Bell restaurants in 21 states across the eastern Midwest, northern Southeast and Northeast regions.
“Nothing is more important than our customers’ safety, and nothing means more to us than their trust,” Julie Masino, President of North America, Taco Bell Corp, said in the news release. “As soon as we received the first consumer complaint, we immediately acted to remove the product from the affected restaurants and proactively worked with the supplier to inform the USDA of our steps to protect our guests.”
The USDA verified there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the affected beef. In a statement, the USDA encourages anyone concerned about a possible illness or injury to contact a health care provider.
Taco Bell customers vented their frustrations over the weekend, as some locations cut beef from their menu over quality concerns.

A Taco Bell representative gave a statement to Business Insider on Monday regarding the initial news, saying, “While some Taco Bell restaurants in the eastern Midwest and Northeast regions may be experiencing a shortage of seasoned beef, we are working diligently to replenish the supply in those restaurants and encourage fans to try any of our other delicious proteins like shredded chicken or steak in the meantime.”
