First Ladies have been a source of fascination since the days of George and Martha Washington. But for every Jackie Kennedy, whose life was chronicled breathlessly—often by T&C—there are others whose contributions have gone without that kind of recognition. Lady Bird Johnson has been one of them—until now.

On March 1, the ABC News podcast In Plain Sight: Lady Bird Johnson will premiere (available on all major podcast platforms), telling the story of Johnson’s life and influence on American politics in large part through audio diaries that have previously been rarely heard.

“I think the discipline of her decision to record a White House diary, her own tapes, represents a major gift to the American public, not just for historians,” says Julia Sweig, the podcast’s host. Sweig is also the author of the anticipated biography Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight, will be released on March 16.

The inaugural episodes of the series, which are titled “14 Days” and “Thank You, Mrs. Vice President,” were co-produced with Best Case Studios and will premiere on March 1. They'll be followed by six more episodes in the weeks after, which will showcase Johnson’s vital involvement in her husband’s administration, and touch on her relationships with historical figures of her era, including everyone from John F. Kennedy to Eartha Kitt.

“I grew up in the America created by the Johnsons’ Civil Rights and Great Society achievements, and the backlash against them, and also in the America of LBJ’s war in Vietnam,” Sweig tells T&C. “But I’m also a Washingtonian and have learned to look past the stagecraft of public figures here, to assume there’s always more than meets the eye. Once I started listening to Lady Bird’s audio diary, it soon became clear, the more I dug, listened, read, and then put it all together in my book and podcast about Lady Bird, that there would be no LBJ without the other LBJ, success, failures, triumphs, and tragedies—all of it.”

Here, Town & Country is pleased to exclusively debut the trailer for the series.
