Syracuse quarterback declared cancer-free, rings bell to celebrate (Video)

Syracuse quarterback Rex Culpepper was diagnosed with cancer in March. While his teammates finished up spring practice, the redshirt sophomore endured long weeks of chemotherapy session after chemotherapy session. Finally, those sessions are over.

As of Friday, Culpepper is cancer-free.

And he celebrated in style, ringing a bell at the hospital with family at his side and cameras surrounding him to capture the moment:

The smile on his face was priceless. Each of the hugs was one-of-a-kind. The emotions were clear for all to see on video.

Culpepper’s cancer diagnosis

Culpepper was diagnosed with testicular cancer in mid-march. He wrote in an Instagram post that he had undergone surgery, and that he would undergo an “extensive 10-week chemotherapy cycle.”

He also, however, had been told that his cancer was “very treatable.” He always had his mind set on returning to football. “I’ll be back on the field ASAP,” he wrote. And – perhaps in a couple of different senses – he stayed true to his word.

Culpepper’s spring game moment

Culpepper took a break from those grueling weeks of chemotherapy to suit of for Syracuse’s spring game. He trotted onto the field for the final drive, and received hugs from teammates. Then he led a drive and threw a walk-off touchdown pass:

He was mobbed by his teammates after the TD. It was a special moment.

Culpepper made his first career start as a redshirt freshman at the end of last season. He will enter the upcoming campaign as a backup. But the starting job was likely the least of his concerns over the past few months. He got the best news he could have hoped for this past week.
