October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the perfect time to honor these celebrity trailblazers.

Born in 1990, Lauren Potter starting acting at age 16, going on to sing her way into audience hearts as a beloved character on the hit show Glee. An outspoken disabilities rights advocate, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Committee for People With Intellectual Disabilities. Her advice? “Don’t ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or impossible it seems,” she told Popsugar.

Luke Zimmerman has long broken down barriers. Born in 1979, Zimmerman was the first person with Down syndrome to go through Beverly Hills High School. While there he also joined the football team, suiting up for games. Onscreen he is best known for his role as Tom Bowman in Secret Life of the American Teenager. He was also the recipient of the 2012 Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award for his work raising Down syndrome awareness, honoring his “determination, spirit, and self-advocacy.” He’ll soon be seen in a film starring Jane Seymour and Denise Richards.

Jamie Brewer is best known as a star of American Horror Story. She made history in 2015 as the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway during New York Fashion week.

She told ET: “It’s an amazing opportunity for women, women that are disabled.”

Madeline Stuart is making waves as both a designer and model. The 21-year-old also runs a dance studio and loves sports and working out. Her biggest dream? She wants to walk the runway for Victoria’s Secret.
