"Suspect Everyone": Social Media Was Buzzing About The Jan. 6 Hearings
In case you missed it, on June 9, live, public hearings began to evaluate the January 6 insurrection that took place on Capitol Hill last year in response to former President Donald J. Trump's 2020 election loss. The hearings are, as was revealed Tuesday night, focused on the role of Trump and other members of the Republican party in the attempt to overthrow the results of the contest.
The incident left five people dead and around 140 Capitol Hill police officers injured. There are set to be six hearings in total, with five more yet to take place. The hearings are set to prove that the former president knowingly incited an attempted coup in an effort to block the peaceful transfer of power. Last night's hearing aired live during prime-time across several news channels, with some like ABC even airing live on TikTok. Though only one hearing has taken place so far, a lot of information has been presented. Testimony from Trump's former staff, confirming that they knew he had lost the election, was broadcast, and we heard from Capitol Hill police officers who were caught at the center of the violence. Video of Ivanka Trump, former White House advisor and daughter of President Trump, going on record to confirm she believed he had lost the election also played. (Daddy was none too pleased about that.)
Of course, with much of the country watching such a historical event, social media was burbling about the findings. Here's what they had to say.
On Twitter, many (including members of Congress) spoke of their disdain for President Trump and his involvement in the attempted coup, while some gave praise for the representatives testifying and for the police officers who were on site that violent day. Mark Hamil showed up with popcorn and a shirt saying to "Suspect Everyone":
Donald Trump must never darken the doorway of the White House again. He is a traitor to our nation. #January6thHearings

I commend the #January6thCommittee for presenting the truth about January 6 in a compelling, understandable manner. Thank you to our brave police officers for risking their lives to defend the Capitol against Trump rioters.

The other thing Trump did not do is move to a secure location. This bloodthirsty mob attacks the Capitol, looking to literally HANG the Vice President, and the President just watches it all on tv. #January6thHearings https://t.co/F4xaYUBHhx

While everyone is praising Rep. Elizabeth Cheney, how about acknowledging the way Rep. Bennie Thompson is running the committee and conducting the hearings. ✊🏿 #January6thHearings

Remembering the single-handed heroism of Officer Eugene Goodman.
As if we could forget, but the #January6thHearings remind us how he was one of the absolute HEROES of the day.
Never forget how he led that mob away from the chamber. #officergoodman #Jan6thHearings pic.twitter.com/awrQgQkYHn— Victoria (@MissyVMG) June 10, 2022
I am SO ready for accountability for the violent insurrection against our government & the coup incited by Drumpf & his minions. Will YOU be watching the @January6thCmte ? 👀#MustSeeTV pic.twitter.com/za7V4ozXRm

Things on TikTok looked a bit different. While the content rollout on the app moves at a much slower pace than Twitter, many outlets and regular users (scroll down below for those) did have videos to make on the matter. Clips from the hearing circulated on the app, including Ivanka Trump appearing to go against her father in her testimony.
Users shared their thoughts and reactions to the hearing, their reactions to Fox News's curious broadcast, and what they think this means for America.
One clip even included video footage of Tina Forte, the Republican Congressional Candidate running against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, at the Jan. 6 insurrection.
