For the first time in nearly a decade, a new ongoing live-action TV show centered on Superman will debut sometime in either 2020 or 2021. And unlike Superman shows from previous generations, this one will specifically focus on Clark Kent and Lois Lane as working parents. If it sounds like The Incredibles, but with Superman and Lois Lane, it kind of is. If you’re someone who was born in the ’80s, you might think a show about Lois and Clark being married and raising a kid is made for you. And you know what, maybe it is?
This week, news broke that the complicated “Arrowverse” of interconnected DC-Superhero shows would get a new spin-off called Superman and Lois. If this sounds a little like that ’90s show you used to love; Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, you’re forgiven. In some ways, this series could be the spiritual successor to that Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher joint. And yet, with all the nostalgia swirling around the other CW superhero shows, it seems like Superman and Lois has its x-ray vision firmly set on an older generation of TV watchers, who want some superhero action, but perhaps, some realistic depictions of what it’s like to be married, and trying to raise a kid, too.
If you’re like me and you hazily remember the Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder Superman films from the ’70s and ’80s (lovingly pictured above), you might recall that Superman and Lois nearly got married in Superman II. And, if you remember Brandon Routh in 2006’s Superman Returns, then you sadly might recall that movie made Superman into a deadbeat dad. This show isn’t going to do that. Instead, it sounds like it’s going to channel the love from the former and ditch the baggage from the latter.

For people who already watch the CW superhero shows, it’s common knowledge that Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch have been playing Clark and Lois for a while now; albeit as guest stars on shows like Supergirl. But now, they’ll be given their own series, and chances are, they will bring in a lot of viewers who haven’t been watching all these other shows at all. And the reason why is simple: a show about Superman and Lois as a married couple trying to raise their son appeals to olds like me who have a hard time keeping up with the cool kids on The Flash, but are totally down to check in on what new-school Supe is up to with his new son.
Oh yeah, did I mention? In this version of Superman, he and Lois have a child named Jon Kent. Last time we saw Jon Kent, he was a baby, but some hardcore comic book pundits (who I exchange late-night text messages with) have told me Jon Kent will probably be about two-years-old in this show. So yeah, this series will probably be about Lois and Clark raising a super-toddler.
Seriously, what’s not to love?
