Super Bowl LII: Pink hits the under with excellent national anthem performance

It took just 1:53 to determine whether some football fans would enjoy the Super Bowl, or whether their entire night was ruined … and it happened before the game even started.

Pink’s rendition of the national anthem came in under the Las Vegas line. Most sports books set the over-under at exactly two minutes. At 1:53, Pink came in under by seven seconds.

That’s not what the oddsmakers anticipated from the pop artist. She was listed at +110 to hit the under coming into the game.

Donning the stage with blonde … or maybe white … hair, Pink’s nailed the performance, not missing a single word. Yes, you could bet on both those things. It was pretty impressive considering she was battling the flu on Saturday.

Despite her fantastic performance, Pink was still battling some flu-like symptoms. She was seen just after the anthem taking something out of her mouth. Initially, people thought it was gum. She later clarified that it was a cough drop.

She also made sure to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes after people found out she was sick.

Pink’s speedy singing bucks the trend in recent years. Last year’s anthem singer, Luke Bryan, clocked in at 2:04, also hitting the over. Before him, Lady Gaga hit the over in 2016 and Idina Menzel hit the over in 2015.

The last person to hit the under was opera singer Renée Fleming. Fleming came in over two minutes, at 2:03, but the over-under was set at 2:23 in 2014.

What does that mean for the game? Probably nothing, the year Fleming went under was one of the few in recent history in which the New England Patriots weren’t playing the Super Bowl. That year, the Seattle Seahawks blew out the Denver Broncos 43-8. If history repeats itself, Super Bowl LII could be over much sooner than anyone expects.

That probably won’t be the case. The Patriots have kept all seven of the Super Bowl appearances pretty tight. Last year’s 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons was the largest margin of victory in all seven of their Super Bowl appearances since 2002. Even their two two losses to the New York Giants were just by three and four points.

Part of that could be due to the Patriots’ slow starts during their last few Super Bowls. The team has not scored in the first quarter during the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. They’ll be looking to break that streak Sunday.

Pink probably hopes that’s not the case. While she did not wear any Philadelphia Eagles gear during the anthem (another bet people may have placed), Pink was born in Pennsylvania and is hoping for an Eagles upset in the big game.

She may have set them on that path, turning in an upset with the under during the anthem.

Turns out, that’s exactly what happened. The Eagles went on to pull off an exciting upset over the Patriots 41-33, winning their first ever Super Bowl.
