Basically everyone knows their Sun sign, but do you know your Venus sign? Your Sun sign is determined by the position of the Sun in the sky the day you were born—like, if you were born on August 12, you’d be a Leo (HBD!)—and your Venus sign is determined by the location of the planet Venus in the sky on the day you were born. (If you don’t know yours, head to a free birth chart calculator like the one on Astro.com.) Venus rules over love, pleasure, and beauty, and your Venus sign describes your love language, the types of relationships you tend to form, and what/who you’re attracted to.

Because of the shape of Venus’s orbit, it’s always close to the Sun—no more than two zodiac signs away. And knowing how these two placements relate in your own birth chart can be pretty eye-opening. You might be an Aries, known for being rash, quick to act, and always wanting immediate gratification…but if your Venus is in Taurus, you want to take relationships slowly and gradually build strong bonds with others.

BTW, if your Venus sign comes before your Sun sign in the zodiac, it’s said to be a “morning star” Venus, and it gives you a more direct approach to your relationships. Morning star Venus has “power top” energy—you’re likely the one who takes charge in your relationship, and it’s got a strong sexual vibe rather than a romantic one. If your Venus sign comes after your Sun sign, it’s an evening star” Venus. This gives you a more receptive approach to relationships, where you often wait for the other person to make the first move, and you prefer to let your partner take charge in the bedroom. Evening star Venus is less sexually charged and exciting but allows you to form deeper, more emotional bonds and experience a ton of romance.

Read all about your Sun-Venus blend below:

If Venus is in the same sign as your Sun:

You form relationships in a way that matches up with your Sun sign’s natural traits. For example, if both your Sun and Venus are in emotional, sensitive Pisces (one of my fave Venus placements, btw), then you find yourself most interested in relationships that are deeply emotional, and you connect with others through emotions and body language more than verbal communication. And someone with both their Sun and Venus in Leo may seek out over-the-top, flashy relationships where they can “show off” their partner and also be totally dedicated to them (Leos are loyal AF).

Basically, if your Sun and Venus are in the same sign, there’s a clear connection between your personality and the types of relationships that you seek out. You’re also able to express affection to others more easily. You tend to seek out people who are similar to you, and it’s easy for you to tell if a relationship has potential.

If Venus is one sign away from your Sun:

If your Venus is one sign away from your Sun, then they’re occupying signs that simply have nothing in common. Signs are classified by element (fire/earth/air/water), modality (cardinal/fixed/mutable), and orientation (extroverted/introverted). When Venus is just one sign away from your Sun, it’s going to have a different element, modality, and orientation than your Sun sign—so, like, they are totally different. Someone with an Aries Sun and a Taurus Venus quickly gets bored of things, always wants to feel excited, and has a very “live fast, die young” attitude…but also wants stable, committed, long-term relationships, which can be challenging to the typical fast-paced lifestyle of Aries. A Libra with their Venus in Virgo might struggle with really, really crushing hard on someone but being unable to stop picking them apart and finding their flaws (classic Virgo behavior), leading them to lose interest fast.

Don’t get it twisted—this Venus-Sun combo isn’t a bad one. Since your Sun and Venus signs are so different, you likely seek out variety when it comes to lovers, because your Sun sign’s “type” isn’t the same as what your Venus sign is looking for. If you’re able to get over any initial obstacles from this Sun-Venus blend, you can build remarkably strong relationships.

If Venus is two signs away from your Sun:

Planets that are two signs away from each other share the same orientation (introverted/extroverted) and are naturally compatible. You might be a fire sign (Aries/Leo/Sagittarius) with Venus in an air sign (Gemini/Libra/Aquarius), which signifies you look for relationships that “fan the flames” of your Sun sign’s trait, and the same goes for water and earth. Let’s say you’re a Capricorn Sun with Venus in Pisces—your compassionate Venus in Pisces allows you to connect with others on an emotional level and form deep, lasting relationships, which is exactly what your Capricorn Sun is looking for.

Since your Sun (your core values) and your Venus (love and pleasure) are so compatible with this type of Sun-Venus blend, then you definitely have a “type,” and it’s not someone who’s exactly the same as you. Bonus: Once you connect with someone who meets your qualifications, it’s easy for you to start a relationship. Personally, this is my favorite type of Sun-Venus blend—it makes relationships easy because although you’re interested in people who are different from you, you can still quickly determine whether there’s a future to your ’ship.

So, what’s your Sun-Venus combo?

While astrology is great for checking compatibility between two people (if you have both of their full birth charts), it’s really good at helping you understand how you, as an individual, connect with others. Venus’s whole deal is to show you how you share and receive affection, what brings you pleasure, and who/what feels attractive to you. Knowing how your Venus and Sun signs relate can help you understand your “style” of loving, even if you don’t have your crush’s birth chart on hand.
