"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Cast Reveals Which Team They're On Ahead of Season 2

We’re officially heading back to Cousins Beach for another eventful summer with our faves from The Summer I Turned Pretty. When the series based on Jenny Han’s novel of the same name premiered its first season on June 17, 2022, it had already been picked up for a second season.

“When I decided to adapt ‘Summer’ for television, I knew we’d need more than one season to honor the story we are telling,” Jenny said in a statement. “To receive a second season pickup ahead of the premiere of Season One is beyond my wildest dreams. I am so grateful to Amazon Studios for this amazing vote of confidence in our show, and cannot wait to bring our incredible team back together to tell the next chapter in our story.”

When does The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 come out?

It’s official: We’ll be spending summer 2023 with our Cousins crew. The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 premieres on Prime Video on July 14! The first three episodes debuts on this date, while all remaining episodes will drop weekly.

Back in April, author and executive producer Jenny Han shared the official poster for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2, writing, “Coming soon 🫶🏼 I can’t wait to share Season 2 with you, out this summer!”

What is The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 about?

Lucky for us, The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the book trilogy by Jenny Han, so we pretty much have the source material before season 2 even hits the Prime Video streamer. Season 1, which is based on the first book, follows 16-year-old Belly as she spends her summer in Cousins Beach with her mom, her older brother Steven, and her mom’s childhood best friend, Susannah, and her sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. The end of last season left us with a major cliffhanger as Belly and Conrad shared a kiss on the beach... while Belly is technically dating his brother, Jere (who still doesn’t know what happened, BTW).

If season 2 is like season 1, then it’ll follow the original plot of the novel with a some modernized changes. The synopsis for the second book, It’s Not Summer Without You, is as follows:

It used to be that Belly counted the days until summer, until she was back at Cousins Beach with Conrad and Jeremiah. But not this year. Not after Susannah got sick again and Conrad stopped caring. Everything that was right and good has fallen apart, leaving Belly wishing summer would never come. But when Jeremiah calls saying Conrad has disappeared, Belly knows what she must do to make things right again. And it can only happen back at the beach house, the three of them together, the way things used to be. If this summer really and truly is the last summer, it should end the way it started—at Cousins Beach.

Who is in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 cast?

Our series regulars will make their return for season 2, including Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, Christopher Briney, Sean Kaufman, and Minnie Mills. Eighth Grade star Elsie Fisher joins season 2 as Skye, while Kyra Sedwick joins in a yet-to-be-named role. Elsie made the official announcement by posting an Instagram Reel in her trailer with Kyra. “#TheSummerITurnedPretty SEE U SOON PALS ☀️💙,” she captioned the post.

Skye isn’t a character in Jenny Han’s original book series, which means the TV adaptation is bringing some newness to Cousins Beach. “We get to create this whole new person,” Elsie told E! News in a recent interview. “Part of what really drew me to the project is that I get to play a person that still feels very true to myself, but is different from the kind of character people have seen me play before.”

What has the cast said about season 2?

In a June 28 interview on The Today Show, Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, and Christopher Briney told host Hoda Kotb about what fans can expect from their characters and the spicy love triangle that continues to ensue in season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty.

"I would say that the characters go through a lot of growth and have experienced new things — as you do, when you grow up — and are sort of learning how to deal with these new feelings and changes in their relationships," Lola said.

Christopher Briney, who plays Conrad in the YA rom-com series, added, "In relation to the first season, the second season grows up with these characters and because they've experienced a lot of big things in their life up to this point. Like, bigger than they had going into the first season — so the tone [of season 2] sort of goes along with them."

As for their stance on which team they're on — Team Conrad, Team Jeremiah, or Team Belly — the cast shared their thoughts in a June 29 interview with E! News. "I think it literally changes every single second of the show," Lola told the outlet, "because the boys constantly show up for her in different ways and then also make mistakes. So I think it's really dependent on every single moment."

Christopher stands by the source material, which points to his on-screen character Conrad. "Having read the books I think he eventually is. At times in their lives, he's right for her. I think whatever choice she makes is the right one."

Of course, Gavin is #TeamJere just like our queen, Lizzo. "I have always said you should marry your best friend. You should date your best friend. And I think Jeremiah is her best friend," he elaborated.

Sean Kaufman, who plays Belly's big bro Steven, revealed that while he's been Team Belly the whole time, he believes that Conrad may be endgame. "I think genuinely the better guy is Conrad. He's emotionally invulnerable, which does not make him better, but he also is a little sweetie pie," Sean explained. "He's just the cutest little thing."

Is there a trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2?

We finally have a full-length trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 — and a preview of Taylor Swift's "Back to December (Taylor's Version)" from the re-record of her 2010 album, Speak Now. The song, which includes lyrics about the "beautiful times" of summer, sets the scene for the drama of season 2, where Belly is still stuck in the middle of a complicated love triangle with Conrad and Jere.

July 14 cannot come quick enough. Back in May, Prime Video revealed a first look at The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 and the love triangle between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah appears more complicated than ever. Belly’s brother, Steven, returns to the beach, as does her bestie, Taylor. The streamer’s photo drop also introduced new characters Skye, played by Elsie Fisher, and a yet-to-be-named Cousins resident portrayed by Kyra Sedgwick.

Are there any clips from The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2?

Yes! The official Instagram account for the Prime Video series teased a scene from the upcoming season on July 4, 2023. In it, we see Belly, Taylor, Steven, Jere, Conrad, and Skye hanging out over ice cream while they reminisce on their extremely competitive nature and suggest playing a game they loved during their childhood at Cousins Beach.

"Well, do you want to watch me beat Conrad's ass?" Belly asks playfully, to which Skye replies, "I wouldn't hate watching that." Watch the full clip below.

When did The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 finish filming?

The show’s official Instagram account shared the end-of-filming news on November 8, 2022, with a photo of Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, and author/executive producer, Jenny Han. “and that’s a wrap on season 2 🎬,” the photo's caption reads.

In July 2022, the show announced on social media that they were “rolling on season 2,” posting a photo of Jenny and Lola together on set.

“It’s truly better than I could have ever hoped for,” newcomer Elsie Fisher shared with E! News about filming TSITP season 2. “Especially because I had nerves stepping into a pre-established show.”
