This Summer, The Surf Lodge Chills Out With a New Wellness Venue

If there’s one thing a New Yorker can count on, it’s this: The Surf Lodge will be the busiest spot in Montauk every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day and, let’s face it, most weekdays in between. The sheer volume of stuff occurring at the 11-year old mini resort—dinners, concerts, dance parties—is unmatched by pretty much any other venue Out East. It’s loud, it’s frenetic; there’s always a line around the pond.

Which is why their team has decided to offer an antidote—or, depending on your preferences, an alternative—to all that legendary debauchery with the opening of a standalone wellness venue. Located on Montauk Highway downtown, The Sanctuary, when it opens this Saturday, will be a one-stop zen shop offering an ongoing roster of wellness programming, fitness classes, vegan beauty items, and activewear.

“The Surf Lodge has been invested in wellness since the beginning, but I felt there was so much more we could offer if we had an entirely separate space,” explains The Surf Lodge owner Jayma Cardoso. “Wellness, and what it means now, has really evolved, and by creating The Sanctuary, we'll have a richer tapestry and forum where guests can gather and be a part of what's next in wellness.”

To help bring that vision to life, Cardoso sought the help of The Surf Lodge’s longtime partnership and wellness director, Marisa Hochberg. “I'm excited for us to have a space solely dedicated to wellness—it sets no limitations in helping guests reach their goals,” Hochberg says.

Among the programming the duo has planned thus far: classes lead by cult favorite fitness instructors such as Melissa Wood, Y7 Yoga’s Sarah Levy, Torch’d’s Issac Boots, The Ness, and Megan Roup; talks from thought leaders such as Bobbi Brown and David Asprey; curated programming from the team behind ABC Carpet and Home’s Deepak HomeBase conversation series; and a pop-up shop featuring Free People's activewear line FP Movement.

“Really, The Sanctuary is a space for leaders in wellness to share their story, wisdom and knowledge,” says Cardoso, who is excited to see how the space evolves. “I think the surprises are yet to come—The Sanctuary is interactive, and guests are part of what's to come. Montauk is truly an inspiring place; we want to share this story and message.” Not to mention help those who are out east for the weekend actually chill out—if they wish.
