Students hold 'Will you marry me?' signs in surprise proposal for special-ed teacher
Twenty excited second-grade students helped their teacher get engaged at school holding “Will you marry me?” signs.
Special education teacher Chelsea Darczuk, 28, had a hunch that her boyfriend Jared Kauffman, 30, would propose soon — and when he suggested a romantic vacation over Labor Day weekend, she was betting on it.
“Jared was insistent on going somewhere for the weekend,” Darczuk tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I said, ‘What about short day trips?’ but he wanted a ‘real vacation.’”
On Thursday, Darczuk packed her bags for a long weekend in Mystic Connecticut and Rhode Island, then drove to work at EastSide Charter School in Wilmington, Delaware.
During the day, she received an urgent text message from her boss, requesting help with a literacy program she led last year.
As Darczuk — who was pulling double duty in the second-and-third grade homerooms — walked through the door, she was started by Kauffman standing in the middle of the room, along with a few other staffers.
Behind him, 20 of her students held four signs that combined read, “Will you marry me?” She was shocked. “It didn’t click at first because I had mentally prepared myself for the possibility of getting engaged this weekend,” Darczuk tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Her now-fiancee said, “I love you and I want to be with you,” before presenting her with a rose-gold ring.
Students cheered for Darczuk and Kauffman and shouted, “Kiss, kiss!” The couple was awarded a “She said yes” sign, with which they took photos. Their wedding is planned for September 2020.
Darczuk says the proposal confused some students, who were under the impression that a wedding had taken place at school. One wondered, “Will he be Mr. Darczuk now?”
