After struggling to find work, woman with a rare genetic syndrome opens bakery for dogs

The doors of Yadi’s Yummies, a store that serves treats for dogs (and their humans), officially opened in Saint Peters, Mo., on Saturday, and the story behind the new go-to stop for dog lovers is incredibly inspirational.

Jessica Eisenbeis was having a tough time trying to find employment after she finished school because of a rare genetic condition called Rubinstein Taybi syndrome. According to her “About Our Chef” page, the syndrome affects the way she learns. So Eisenbeis, who was considered unemployable by other businesses because of her special needs, decided to open her own.

After two years of selling her homemade dog treats to customers at fairs and markets, Eisenbeis realized that it was time to open a brick-and-mortar venue, named after her rescue dog, Yadi.

Eisenbeis, whose treats contain 100 percent natural, human-grade ingredients, said she was “super excited” at the grand opening, according to Fox 2.

Ten percent of the proceeds of Yadi’s Yummies go to Annie’s Fund, named in honor of Eisenbeis’s second dog, to help shelter dogs in need of medical help. “We named this fund after Annie, our Newfie, since she herself experienced several expensive but life saving surgeries and is a happy and healthy dog because of them,” the website says. “We realize dogs that have been abused and abandoned might not have access to necessary medical treatment due to the cost so we set up Annie’s fund as a way to help.” People can also make donations through her GoFundMe page.

Besides helping rescue dogs, Eisenbeis also hopes that her business is a success so she can help her fellow humans as well. “Her goal is to someday, if we’re successful, to be able to hire people with disabilities,” Cindy Eisenbeis, Eisenbeis’s mother, said. “I think the biggest thing is not to underestimate people’s ability. She was told she wasn’t able to work and obviously that’s not true.”
