'Nomadland' Won the Oscar for Best Picture—Here's How to Watch It

Chloé Zhao's critically acclaimed Nomadland was nominated for six Academy Awards, ultimately scoring the wins for Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Picture. She became the first woman of color to win in the director category, and with Promising Young Woman's Emerald Fennell's nomination, this also marked the first time in Oscars history that two women directors were in the running for the award.

The Oscar nods are the latest set of accolades for Zhao, who also recently got her due at the 78th Golden Globes ceremony, where she earned two awards: best picture drama and best director. She became the first Asian woman producer and the first woman of color to win in the categories; she was also nominated for best motion picture screenplay. Her lead star, Frances McDormand, additionally earned a nomination for best actress in a drama.

The film, adapted from the book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, follows the life of McDormand's character after the 2008 Great Recession. The 60-something widow treks across the American West, living in her van and looking for work while on the road.

"Now, this is why I fell in love with making movies and telling stories, because it gives us a chance to laugh and cry together, and it gives us a chance to learn from each other and to have more compassion for each other," said Zhao during one of her Golden Globe acceptance speeches. "So thank you, everyone, who made it possible for me to do one I love."

Nomadland was released in select IMAX theaters on January 29, followed by a release in regular theaters and drive-ins, per Variety. Still, as we continue to field public health guidelines amid the COVID-19 pandemic, you may want to watch the award-winning film straight from home. Below, find out where to stream Nomadland before this Sunday's Oscars ceremony.
