Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has cast doubt on the prospect of Robin Buckley being given a girlfriend in the fifth and final season of the show.

The next installment of the Netflix sensation has been delayed due to the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike, but on the promotional tour for her latest movie, Asteroid City, Hawke opened up about Robin's future on the show.

During the fourth season, Robin has grown closer to her crush Vickie (Amybeth McNulty) and fans have speculated that this relationship could play a larger role in the final season. However, Hawke is not completely sold on the idea.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment Hawke shared: "I don’t know. I feel mixed about it. I feel that it’s both a great thing, but I also love characters where their love life is not the centre of their existence.

"That friendship with Steve is so special. And friendships have been carrying me through my life. I think they’re really important and they deserve their airtime."

It was announced last month that filming for the fifth season of the show would be delayed as a result of the strikes by members of the WGA.

The action, the first of its kind since 2007, has seen writers contend issues regarding pay in the streaming-dominant era.

In response to the delay, co-creators The Duffer Brothers wrote: "Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike.

"We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong"

Whilst production may have ceased for the time being, it didn’t stop some major Stranger Things news coming out, with Linda Hamilton joining the cast for season five.

The actress, best known for playing Sarah Connor in the Terminator franchise, was announced as part of Netflix’s global fan event, TUDUM, but her role currently remains a mystery.

Stranger Things seasons 1-4 are now streaming worldwide on Netflix.
