The Story Behind the Royal Wedding’s Viral Page Boy Photo Is So Adorable

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding was full of iconic picture-perfect moments, including one memorable freeze-frame of one of the page boys grinning as he photobombed the bride’s walk down the aisle. (See it at 1:25 in the video below.) The image went viral, and now the boy’s father has revealed that the excitement caught on camera was entirely genuine.

“I asked him, and he said he’d never heard a trumpet before,” Ben Mulroney, father of twins John and Brian Mulroney, told People. The boys held Markle’s veil as she walked down the aisle, and in the image that went viral, Brian can be seen excitedly smiling a big, toothy grin behind the elegant bride. “I think when he walked in, I think he saw all the people there and the flowers — none of that was there during the rehearsal.”

The seven-year-old twins joined Prince George, 4, and Harry’s godson Jasper Dyer, 6, as the page boys for the ceremony. The bridesmaids were Princess Charlotte, 3; Harry’s goddaughters Florence van Cutsem, 3, and Zalie Warren, 2; Markle’s goddaughters Remi Litt, 6, and Rylan Litt, 7; and Ivy Mulroney, 4, the twins’ sister.

The young wedding party got their fair share of memorable camera time, including in the official wedding portraits, where they hammed it up and had fun. Mulroney told People that, even though his children had important responsibilities on the big day, he and Jessica also made sure to stress that they should have fun — and judging from Brian’s viral photo moment, it’s clear they did.

“That, to me, was the thing that gave me the most pride, that we didn’t put so much pressure on them that this wasn’t joyful for them,” he said. “It was pretty darn joyful.”
