The story behind the name of Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn's newborn daughter
Yesterday Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn announced the birth of their first child, Lyra Antarctica, in an adorable picture posted to Instagram showing her tiny booties on a colourful baby blanket. Even though, it's been less than 24 hours since the announcement, we already have a very credible theory for the meaning of her beautiful name.
The couple, who have been together since 2015, announced yesterday that they have named their daughter Lyra Antarctica, and both names seem to have a significant meaning.
The first name, Lyra, is thought to be a direct tribute to Ed's favourite series of books, His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. The main character in the novels is Lyra Belacqua, a young girl who finds herself fighting in a cosmic war. In 2015, Ed tweeted about his love of the books saying they were "the best books [he'd] ever read."
There is also a theory to the Antarctica part of her name. As creepy as conception maths is, it looks as though Ed and Cherry could have been travelling in Antarctica nine months before their daughter was born, which got fans thinking this is where Lyra could have been conceived. The theory started after a picture of Ed in Antarctica nine months ago surfaced on Instagram.

While Cherry isn't in the picture with Ed, the post coincides with the time that Ed told fans he was taking a step back from his career to spend time with family and friends, so it's assumed that Cherry would have been on the trip with him.

Ed and Cherry have been together since 2015, and have known each other since they were kids when they both attended Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, Suffolk.
The couple have always been very private about their personal lives; with Ed only confirming last summer that they had tied the knot in a private ceremony in late 2018. Lyra Antarctica is the couple's first child together.
