Stocks power higher on earnings optimism

Stocks are soaring as earnings optimism grows, and big reports loom tonight. Plus, Amazon, Microsoft, Intel and Starbucks are all set to report. And, is Ford getting out the car biz? Winners and losers

Stocks in the red: AT&T, as the No. 2 wireless carrier reported lower- than-expected quarterly profit and lost subscribers from its pay TV business; Ebay as profit and revenue for the quarter was below analysts estimates, with its current quarter sales outlook missing as well; and Envision Healthcare, with shares dropping as short seller Jim Chanos disclosed in a CNBC interview that he is short the healthcare company.

Stocks in the green: Chipotle having its second best day since its IPO in 2006 as shares jump 20% and revenue for the quarter came in at $1.1 billion; Domino’s Pizza as earnings and sales blew past Wall Street estimates; and AMD, with shares surging on an earnings beat, with sales jumping 40% powered by the chipmaker’s Ryzen and EPYC processors.
