Stephenie Meyer Announced a New Twilight Book, Midnight Sun —and Twitter Is Thrilled

Twelve years after releasing what was believed to be the final Twilight book, Breaking Dawn, best-selling author Stephenie Meyer announced on Monday that she’s continuing the vampire love phenomenon with a new companion novel: Midnight Sun, to be released on August 4. According to her publisher, Little, Brown, Midnight Sun is a retelling of the Twilight origin story from the perspective of hot, sparkly-skinned vampire Edward, whose sexual thirst for mere mortal teen Bella conflicts with his desire to drink her blood.

“As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life,” publisher Little, Brown writes in its synopsis. “How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?”

True “Twi-hards” know that Midnight Sun is not a brand-new concept: After a 12-chapter manuscript leaked online in 2008, Meyer pressed pause on the book, but gave fans a taste by posting a now-deleted fragment on her website. Many hoped Midnight Sun would come together some day, making this mid-quarantine gift all the more delicious.

“It’s a crazy time right now and I wasn’t sure it was the right time to put this book out,” Meyer said via video on Good Morning America, “but some of you have been waiting for just so so long it didn’t seem right to make you wait any more.”

The news quickly awakened Twilight Twitter, which praised Meyer for retaining her literary power despite her long absence from the public eye.

Some noted that the timing of the announcement was (potentially) rife with meaning, as the character of Edward Cullen nearly died of Spanish flu in 1918, only to be made immortal by his adopted vampire-dad, Carlisle Cullen.

Others rejoiced that Meyer is hardly restraining herself in telling the tale from Edward’s perspective, giving fans an intensive 672 pages.

Now, the Twilight hive prepares to rise again.

But the burning question remains: Is there any chance whatsoever that former mid-aughts couple Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart would reprise their roles as Edward and Bella? Probably not, as Pattinson has mercilessly and hilariously trolled the franchise. And yet, shards of hope remain that R-Patz could at least lend his voice to the Audible version.
