Stephen Curry, Warriors already discussing contract extension: 'I'm fully committed'

Stephen Curry still has two years left on the five-year, $201 million contract extension he signed with the Golden State Warriors in 2017, but he’s already thinking about the future — and he wants that future to happen with the Warriors.

After the Warriors’ first day of training camp on Monday, Curry spoke to the press about his long-term plans. To the relief of every Warriors fan, he said that he and the team have already been discussing his next contract extension.

"We have conversations," Curry said via ESPN. "Everything's on the table right now. Everything I've talked about about being a Warrior and what the future holds. Obviously [I'm] fully committed on what that is. And understanding I've got to do what's right for me and the team and having those conversations. I feel blessed to be in that position where I can say that and truly believe that, so it's a matter of just letting things play out the way they should and that's kind of where we're at right now."

Curry is signed through the 2021-2022 season, which means he’s currently eligible for a three-year, $156 million contract extension that would kick in during the 2022-2023 season. But even with the Dec. 21 deadline coming up, there’s no rush to get this done. Curry has made his intentions clear to the Warriors, and they’ve engaged in conversations. With two years left on his current deal, there’s plenty of time left. Curry has no plans to go anywhere else.

Curry wants to retire with Warriors

Curry said way back in 2013 that he wanted to retire with the Warriors, and on Monday he confirmed that his feelings haven’t changed one bit over the past seven years.

“Wearing the same jersey for as long as I can … that’s a huge goal,” Curry said via The Athletic. “It’s an elite club of guys that you look at that have played with the same organization and been successful and achieved greatness in that respect. So that would be an awesome accomplishment. … But that also goes with: There’s a lot more to be accomplished on the court. And, again, I can’t fast-forward to what the end is going to be and not enjoy the moment, enjoy this challenge that we have in front of us and what I have left to accomplish as a player.

Steph wouldn’t be Steph if he wasn’t thinking about everything else he wants to accomplish. Three NBA championships and two MVPs aren’t enough for him. But he’s committed to living in the moment and making sure he enjoys the process. With the end of his career still in the distant future, Curry wants to dedicate his time to making sure the Warriors can be serious contenders.

“We want to be in a situation where we’re competing for championships every single year,” Curry said. “I want to be a part of that and that’s the goal.”
