Stella McCartney: Meghan Markle's reception dress was her last chance to reflect 'the joy and the human within her'

Stella McCartney has been asked about designing one of Meghan Markle‘s two wedding dresses countless times — and she probably will be for the rest of her life.

As BBC News reports, the British fashion designer was once again quizzed about working with the duchess as she marked the opening of her new London flagship store Tuesday night.

McCartney told the news outlet that she was “very proud” to have designed the halter-neck gown that Meghan wore to her May 19 evening wedding reception. The gig has resulted in skyrocketing sales for her brand.

“The role that she’s taken on is very austere, it’s very serious, and I think there’s a great weight that she has acquired through that, and she takes it very seriously,” McCartney said. “It was the last moment that she could reflect sort of the other side to her … the joy and the human within her.”

While there’s a deeper implication to the remark — which suggests that joining the royal family lacks “joy” — the internet is focused on having a field day with McCartney’s reference to the duchess’s “human” side.

McCartney added that the duchess was very involved in the gown’s creation.

“You know, it was very much her dress,” she said. “And I felt very proud that she came to me for that part of the wedding, and that she got to reflect her in it.

“We worked together. When you come to a wedding, you don’t just just go, ‘Here, this is what you’re wearing.’ That person has to feel like a million dollars; they need to feel like they own it.”
