Stefon, One of the Most Iconic Characters on 'SNL,' Finally Returned Last Night

Comedian Bill Hader hosted Saturday Night Live's latest episode with a vengeance. The actor, who was a cast member for eight years, from 2005 to 2013, could impersonate almost anyone and any emotion required of him, from elderly news reporter Herb Price to Prince Philip. Arguably, however, Hader's best character was one of SNL's most iconic originals: giggly New York club promoter Stefon — last seen four years ago.

Yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day, so you bet Stefon returned to the 'Weekend Update" segment to chat with usual hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che — whom Stefon nicknamed La La Land and Moonlight — to tell us what New York’s hottest clubs are these days. He also gave us a little update on his life: Stefon's now married to Seth Meyers. As Stefon says: “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!”

His latest appearance as Stefon felt just like the old days. The first rec from this club promoter? “DOUUUCHE,” a former CVS that became a Chase Bank and then became a CVS again, giving it a "familiar yet troubling feel, like when Larry King would play himself in a move."

"This place has everything: desk sets, key fobs, kale chips, Roman J. Israel, Esq. Plus, you can play everyone’s favorite party game, 'The Stranger,'" Hader-as-Stefon continued, almost breaking character with a smirk. "Do you know that Billy Joel song 'The Stranger'? Well, it’s when you sit on Billy Joel’s hand until it’s numb, and then you rub yourself with it. So you can pretend it’s Bruce Springsteen’s hand."

For St. Patrick’s Day, Stefon suggested New York's hottest "Irish club," called "Off to Church, Mother!" According to Stefon, this place also has everything, including TED Talks and Roman J. Israel, Esq. (again). Stefon's top tip? "Be sure to hit the dance floor and do a jig with Ireland’s hottest Farrah-chauns, leprechauns who look like Farrah Fawcett."

Sefon’s third and final recommendation came with a special appearance by John Mulaney, who plays his lawyer. (Flashback: Per Vanity Fair, a running joke behind the scenes on SNL was that Mulaney would change the lines on Stefon's cue cards at the last second.)

“Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, Please,” is a former haunted hospice built in the Upside-Down World that was closed when inspectors discovered a "sexy form of asbestos." Now, it features "young popes" as well as "old popes," plays "seizure-inducing Malaysian music," and lets dachshunds and corgis in for free on Wednesday nights. (Stefon advises us to avoid the dance floor on these so-called "Long and Low Nights.")

"It’s that thing of—you know what, it’s a new era, and I don’t want to say a word that could be insensitive," Stefon says while describing the club, before calling on Mulaney for advice. "Could I consult my lawyer quickly? He’s an attorney and a conceptual piss artist named Shy."
