You Can Stay at a Hotel Next to an Active Volcano in Hawaii

There’s only one hotel you can stay at if you’re looking to spend the night in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes. The hotel itself is dedicated to sharing the area’s history and legacy with its guests through local ingredients on all of the menus, as well as the opportunity to camp more remotely in the park. Three miles from the main Volcano House you’ll find the Nāmakanipaio Campground, which has 10 single-room camper cabins. (Bonus: They were recently refurbished.) And if you’re looking to get even more out there, you can rent a tent from the property for your own night under the stars or bring your own equipment.

There’s no shortage of guide-led tours, either. Guests will have the chance to book rainforest tours, experience sunsets on Kilauea, learn about the local geology, and go on guided hikes along the Ha’akulamanu Trail. There are also complementary educational tours led by Friends of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. If you’re looking for a moment to chill out, take advantage of the property’s meditation room, where you’ll find floor-to-ceiling windows with exceptional views of the steam rising up from the nearby crater. For a bit of physical activity, you can rent a cruiser bike from the hotel to take around the park. Make sure and stop by the Kilauea Visitor Center when you’re there for information on recent eruptions, hiking maps, and a full schedule of activities led by park rangers.
