The COVID-19 pandemic continues to batter communities across the United States, with the latest figures showing that there have been around 20.6 million cases of the disease so far and 352,000 deaths in the country. With the exception of Vermont and Hawaii, every state in the country is classified by the Covid Act Now data tracker as either being in a "severe outbreak" or "active or imminent outbreak," but the situation is especially serious in one state in particular: Arizona. Local Arizona news channel ABC15 reported that "for the second time in this pandemic, Arizona leads the world in the number of COVID-19 cases." The state's rate for daily new cases is 111.7 per 100,000 people, as of Jan. 5.
The last time that Arizona recorded the highest global infection numbers was back in June 2020. According to data from the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), Arizona reported 62,047 new COVID cases over the past week, including more than 17,200 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, Jan. 3, a record high for a single day.
With numbers boosted by families mixing over Thanksgiving and Christmas, 76 percent of Arizona's ICU beds are currently occupied.
