Starbucks Has Been Secretly Testing Sugar-Free Frappuccinos

Did you notice?!

Your favorite blended coffee beverage may have gotten a secret makeover. According to CNN, Starbucks has been secretly trying out new versions of Frappuccinos and lattes in stores located in California, Missouri, and Rhode Island.

The reason behind the switch? The tweaks to the formulas are meant to help reduce sugar while keeping our favorite frappy flavor intact. The new Fraps separate sugar and flavor; they don’t rely on the pumps of added flavoring like the previous formula, which means new versions of the drink are lower in grams of sugar and in calories. Apparently the company's goal is “to reduce sugar in its indulgent beverages, like Frappuccinos, by 25% by 2020,” CNN says.

Our favorite sweet treats are definitely delicious, but a lot of those foods come loaded with sugar. In recent years, the sweet additive has come under criticism for contributing to unhealthy eating habits and possibly disrupting our sleep schedule. The average person consumes about 82 grams of sugar every day, and eats an average of 66 pounds of added sugar per year. So, it kind of makes sense that Starbucks would be taking steps to tweak their popular drinks in such a way to reduce sugar and appeal to a wider variety of consumers.

Starbucks has been testing the new recipes at a variety of stores, and apparently customers are already loving the new drinks. "Customers are responding positively," a rep told CNN. "Which is why we're continuing to test it." There's no word on whether the drinks will expand beyond the current 600 stores they're currently being tested in.

The coolest thing about all this? You may have already tried the new formula and not even noticed it.
