Remember back when there was a leaked poster for Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker and even Mark Hamill told you it was fake? Welp, turns out it was real. In a big unveiling of new Star Wars merchandise, one plot detail which previously seemed totally insane has been 100 percent confirmed because of a toy.
Don’t keep reading if you don’t want to know this very silly spoiler for The Rise of Skywalker.
Okay, so back in March, art for a Rise of Skywalker was supposedly “leaked” but then after Mark Hamill dunked on everyone online, it was generally accepted that the art was the work of some fans. Weirdly, one very goofy-looking alien from the poster was later confirmed to be in the movie, and now, there’s an even bigger bombshell: C-3PO will totally wield Chewbacca’s giant bowcaster blaster making this first Star Wars movie in which C-3PO will become an action badass.
During the Triple Force Friday, cast members including Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Kerri Russell, and others showed-off the new Star Wars toys, which casually included an action figure of C-3PO where he is holding the giant Wookiee gun and wearing some kind of bandoleer. Funnily enough, this detail was specifically mocked by Mark Hamill in March, on Twitter. When one fan pointed out the weirdness of C-3PO holding a big space gun, acting like a badass, Hamill responded with a crying and laughing emoji.
But now, it’s totally legit! This new toy has spoiled a weird part of The Rise of Skywalker. For some reason, at some point in the movie, C-3PO will hold Chewbacca’s famous gun. Recently, the entire Internet freaked-out when the newest trailer showed heroic Rey seemingly acting like she had turned evil. But, you know, C-3PO’s eyes were red in that trailer, too. So is everyone turning evil now? Or is C-3PO just the Rambo of Star Wars now?
Obviously, Star Wars has a proud tradition of having low-key spoilers appear in toy form before the films actually come out. In 1999, everyone knew exactly what Darth Maul’s lightsaber looked like, plus all sorts of lines of dialogue from the film thanks to the aggressive toy line of the time. In other words, it wouldn’t be new-Star Wars-movie hype-season unless toys for kids were starting to shape our thoughts about the story of the Force.
