Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's trailers loved to hype up the appearance of 'Dark Rey', with fans wondering for months if the heroine would actually turn evil. Ultimately, that cool shot of her whipping out her flip-out, red lightsaber was just part of a short-lived vision.

Dark Rey's final design is pretty simple, with her hood linking her to her grandfather Palpatine. But they could have gone with something quite different, and very reminiscent of one of pop culture's most famous good girls gone bad.

Concept artist Adam Brockbank shared an early development stage version of Dark Rey to his Instagram, and the long dark red coat and flaming hair is giving us major Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix vibes (specifically the X-Men: The Last Stand version).

It's been over a year since The Rise of Skywalker released to wrap up the numbered-episode Star Wars movies (for now, anyway).

However, we're still left with a lot of plot threads that were left unsolved, like how Palpatine survived being thrown down the Death Star II shaft and who in the world he... did the dirty with *shudder*.

They did recently reveal that the Sith wayfinder that Kylo Ren used was once used by Darth Vader, so that's something, we guess.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K.
