Star Wars: John Boyega on Finn’s Surprising Evolution in The Last Jedi

Star Wars heroes have survived wampa attacks, carbonite hibernation, trash compacting and much more. So in The Force Awakens, when John Boyega’s Stormtrooper-turned-hero Finn suffered a lightsaber to the back, everyone knew somehow he’d return.

And he does in The Last Jedi, looking like he could take on the whole Empire himself.

“His emotions are kind of against the clock now, and it’s a very vital moment for him,” Boyega, 25, says of Finn in PEOPLE’s new special issue Star Wars: The Ultimate Guide to The Last Jedi (on newsstands now).

Not since Darth Vader threw the Emperor over the railing in Return of the Jedi has a Star Wars bad guy turned good. That was the case with Finn in Episode VII. But now that he looks like he has physically recovered from that lightsaber injury, where is his head at?

“We meet Finn at a point in Episode VIII where he needs to decide where he belongs,” Boyega says. “The Resistance are under pressure, the First Order are in retaliation mode, and they’re fighting back with everything they’ve got.”

The Last Jedi opens Dec. 15.
