It turns out the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model who breastfed during a runway show wasn’t trying to pull a publicity stunt, she was just being practical.
On Tuesday, model mom Mara Martin has explained she wasn’t actually planning on nursing her 5-month-old daughter on the runway during the Sports Illustrated event in S. Beach, Flordia last weekend. Instead, her decision was 100 percent born out of necessity.
“She was getting a little hungry and it was her dinnertime because the show kept getting pushed back…” Martin told the Today show. “Honestly I didn’t even think twice about it because I do it every single day.” Countless moms and their partners can surely relate. Before having a child, seeing a woman breastfeeding in public can be jarring, but if you have a kid, it’s suddenly not weird at all. Which is why Martin’s move was so relatable and cool. “I think a woman should be able to feed their baby when, where, however, they want to feed them and it shouldn’t be a topic of discussion,” she said. “I’m just so grateful to be a part of it and that they chose me to represent a mom, which is exactly who I am.”
It’s pretty refreshing that Martin wasn’t planning on getting her 15 minutes of fame just by breastfeeding her daughter in public. The fact that the whole thing wasn’t planned was corroborated by MJ Day, editor of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, who said: “Mara was holding her baby and was nursing her. I was like, ‘Do you want to just nurse while you walk down the runway?’ She was like, ‘I would love to do that.’”
