Spinal Tap to Reunite for Democratic Fundraiser on Oct. 14

The fictional rock band Spinal Tap, immortalized in the 1984 “mockumentary” bearing their name, will reunite with costar Rob Reiner for a virtual fundraiser on Oct. 14. Guitarist Nigel Tufnel (a.k.a actor Christopher Guest), bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) and singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) will team up with Reiner to help raise funds for Democrats in Pennsylvania — a traditional swing state that is likely to be a deciding factor in next month’s presidential election. “Announcing today: ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ cast is reuniting to benefit the Democratic Party of Pennsylvania,” Reiner tweeted Thursday night. “Join me, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean on Oct.14 for a virtual reunion and help @PADems ‪#TakeItToEleven.”

The announcement reads, “This one-time LIVE event is only streaming Wednesday, October 14th, and every dollar raised goes directly towards ending Trumpism by winning Pennsylvania.

“MOST PEOPLE ARE CHIPPING IN $20.20. Add your donation now for your link to the livestream on 10/14!”

The musicians have reunited many times in the years since the film’s release, most elaborately in 1992 for a new album, “Break Like the Wind,” and tour. In an act of resounding absurdity, they also played New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall in 2001.

The most recent major reunion took place as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York last year. The three musicians delivering a set packed with their “classics,” complete with a special guest appearance by Elvis Costello, at New York’s Beacon Theatre last year as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. Reiner, in character as Marty DiBergi, director of the original “mockumentary,” was also on hand for the post-screening, pre-performance Q&A.
