From Cosmopolitan

This week’s episode of The Hills felt like the calm before a storm, and that’s not just because everyone’s been boating it up. Spencer and Heidi celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, Audrina reconnected with another ex (Ryan Cabrera!), and Justin and Stephanie worked on their friendship. The biggest surprise? Just how lovey-dovey Brody and Kaitlynn were at her gala (considering recent events). Also, that production was kind enough to work in five seconds of Whitney Port.

We spoke to Spencer Pratt about what was real, what wasn’t, and what it felt like to watch Speidi's special moment play out on TV.

On how the season is progressing:

I just want to give a special thanks right off the jump to SUPERSTAR MILEY CYRUS and her contributions to the show’s continued success. I don’t know if I’m just in the best mood because Miley’s out here smoking amateur firemen on social media, but this episode just knocked it out of the park for me.

On his revelations about depression, emotions, and eating his feelings:

The producers were always asking me, "what’s it like being multi-millionaires and losing all that money once the show was over?” I always related it to food. I was watching the interview and I thought: “Dang, they got me. They got me eating pie!” That was all very real.

I know that might not seem like so much to everyone else, but learning to take care of myself, especially after being in the public eye so long, was a real process. I’m glad to be off eating a pie a day. I did have two pieces the other night, so that relationship’s still going. But it’s way more healthy.

On Audrina reconnecting with early-aughts legend Ryan Cabrera:

I was just so upset for him cause I was like, you're back on MTV, you got your guitar, you taught the narrator of The Hills how to play a harmonica, and you’re just out here doing improv about boat names? You can do that any day of the week! Just go down to the marina and see what inspires you, but you’re on TV right now: Play your hits!!

I don't care if it's vintage, but what did we just hear? I’m glad Heidi’s not out here trying that. They played Heidi’s banger tonight, and it was a dang hit.

Ryan probably played a bunch, and production did him dirty. He probably did his whole album on that dinghy, but had Audrina to do the harmonica for 45 minutes, and then they only used that clip.” Dang.

On Stephanie and Justin Bobby’s relationship:

Watching them in that pool hall, my first thought is that they can definitely star in one of these Netflix series like “Ozark.” These two always look like they're plotting bank heists.

There wasn't enough cigar smoke, but I was definitely like, I don't want a problem with these two. They'd flee to Mexico real quick. Stephanie called Justin Bobby “the best criminal,” and that’s a huge compliment coming from an actual criminal.

I know Stephanie claims they had nothing going on, and I can’t get into her head space, but watching this back, it definitely felt like they had something. Justin’s new date came way out of left field for her. Stephanie was asking a lot of questions.

If they were just friends, Justin would have said, "Hey, none of your business, pal. Just because you have a brother, and I have a sister, and we're so close, doesn't mean you get to interrogate me.”

On Stephanie working so hard to get an apology from Audrina.

Apologies are very important to The Pratts, clearly. But you can’t always get an apology. That’s what I’ve learned.

I think, the only apology Audrina wants to talk about is the one she should get from Justin. But Justin’s too busy to apologize, because now he’s gotta worry about Ashley Wahler calling him a loser. Stephanie’s not high up on the list of who’s getting a “sorry” text.

On Spencer's spending habits:

Spencer: Heidi's definitely right about my spending. That's why she's the CEO. It's hard when your company and your brand all feel like the same thing!

I’m definitely not as reckless as before, though. Gotta drink some of the cheaper wine at home. I’m not the 2009-2010 Spencer who thinks he's Tom Cruise, and he's going to get so much famous person money anymore.

Heidi: That's a continuing conversation that we have! I don't want to be the bad guy all the time, and I want him to enjoy what he's working hard for. At the same time, I don't want to let it get ridiculous. You’ve got to be teammates. Our job is to rein each other in. Balance is a huge priority for us, so when Spencer needs that balance, I'm that lady.

On Kaitlynn:

Spencer: I thought it was a premonition when she said, “I don't want to be known as anyone’s wife. I'm somebody.” That was great because it was very empowering, but...was that also a subtle hint?

We do know that Miley was watching episode two—or reading the recaps!—based on her comments about Brody taking a nap in his car on IG, but I wonder if this was also Kaitllynn giving her subtle clues? “Hey girl, I'm gonna end this fake marriage, and you and me are going to go to Italy as soon as this gala is over. Get that yacht ready!”

On missing Kaitlynn’s gala:

I didn’t watch it and think, "Dang, I wish I got to go to the gala,” but I think Miley Cyrus came and performed "Party in the USA” after, so I’m sad to miss out on all that.

That was an emotional balance. Our anniversary is one of my favorite memories, and I’m so happy I can watch it back. But there is a reality show mercenary in me who is like, oh my gosh, all this gala and no drama? I could have brought some drama.

On his and Heidi’s anniversary:

I was just in heaven, because this was dreams coming true, prayers getting answered. To be out on a boat and have this kind of cinematography? That was better than any iPhone.

Anybody can say, "Oh that's fake,” but it was a big deal for us to go out and have a date night. To get dressed up. Getting Heidi out there is a top memory. It’s forever.

I loved being on The Hills before, but it didn't feel like, "oh my God, there's my life," until now.
