Driver caught speeding at 132mph in a 50mph zone 'was late for work'

A motorist caught driving at nearly three times the speed limit on a busy Yorkshire bridge told police he was speeding because he “was late for work”.

The 20-year-old man reached a top speed of 132mph in a 50mph zone, driving across the Humber Bridge near Kingston-upon-Hull.

The driver was caught speeding on the A15 by an unmarked traffic police car in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police said the motorist "continued to drive at high speed in heavy rain".

Humberside Police said in a tweet: "Vehicle sighted #A15 overtaking an unmarked traffic car, the 20 year old driver continued to drive at high speed in heavy rain.

“Clocked at 132mph in a 50mph limit as it went across the HumberBridge.

“Driver's excuse was that he was late for work! Reported for summons."

The force’s tweet gained a raft of comments from social media users.

One person tweeted: “My 3 cars have a combined top speed of about 61 MPH.

“This kid should be forced to ride a 50cc moped for the rest of his life.... if, he ever gets a licence back.”

Another user, Samantha Hunt, said: “132mph over the bridge is insane. He needs a ban and an alarm clock.”

The unnamed driver is due to be served with a summons to appear in court at a later date.
