The president of Southeast Missouri State University, Carlos Vargas, has apologized for drinking from a beer bong at a tailgate party that took place on Sept. 15, before the school’s football team faced off against Southern Illinois University.

The video of Vargas chugging from a skeleton-shaped Halloween-inspired beer bong was shared on Barstool SEMO’s Twitter account on Saturday morning. That same day, Vargas released an apology to members of the SEMO community.

“I made a poor decision,” Vargas wrote. “During my attendance at a tailgate party prior to the Southeast football game on September 15, I was observed being offered and accepting to drink beer from a beer bong, a device normally associated with excessive or binge drinking, which is conduct I do not condone.”

Vargas goes on to say that his actions depicted in the video are not something he is proud of, and the unflattering images are “certainly not expected from the president of Southeast Missouri State University.”

But, like … can’t a guy live? Vargas, who became the university president in 2015, is a grown man who made the choice to engage in drinking, where no one else was harmed as he expertly chugged some beer.

The Southeast Board of Regents president, Donald LaFerla, wrote that Vargas “immediately accepted responsibility for his actions” and “assured me that this one incident is not reflective of a broader pattern of behavior.”

While Vargas was quick to apologize for the video, many rose to his defense on social media.
