Sources: Rockets change course on release of Troy Williams
The Houston Rockets are changing course on the release of Troy Williams and are still working through their decision, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Rockets signed veteran center Brandan Wright on Monday and need to open a roster spot before inking Johnson after he clears waivers on Tuesday. Houston — the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference — is 42-13 entering Tuesday night’s road game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Williams is in his second NBA season after showing promise as a rookie with Houston and Memphis last season, when he averaged 6.2 points and 18.6 minutes in 30 games. He was expected to receive interest as a free agent, but will now remain with the Rockets.
Williams has appeared in only four games for the Rockets this season, spending most of the year with G League affiliate Rio Grande Valley. He’s averaging 19.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in the G League. He signed a multiyear deal to re-sign with the Rockets in free agency last summer.
Williams, 23, went unselected in the 2016 NBA draft after three standout years at Indiana.
