Sources: Celtics to renounce rights to RFA Terry Rozier to make room for Kemba Walker
The Boston Celtics will renounce the rights to guard Terry Rozier, making him an unrestricted free agent, to open a max slot for free agent Kemba Walker, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
It was reported Saturday that Walker plans to commit to the Celtics on Sunday, when free agency opens, agreeing to a four-year, $141 million max deal.
Rozier, who was a restricted free agent, played well in helping the Celtics to the Eastern Conference finals in 2018 without the injured Kyrie Irving, but he struggled this past season when Irving returned to the mix.
Rozier, 25, averaged nine points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 79 games (14 starts) last season for Boston.
After the Celtics were eliminated by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the playoffs, Rozier told Yahoo Sports: “I don't give a f--- what nobody say, I sacrificed the most out of anybody. I'm a top point guard in this league. I feel like it's a fresh start, whether I'm here or whether I'm gone.”
The Celtics drafted Rozier 16th overall out of Louisville in 2015.
Walker, an eight-year NBA veteran, is coming off his third straight All-Star appearance and first All-NBA nod, earning third-team honors with a career year. He was eligible for a supermax contract with the Charlotte Hornets, but could not agree to terms with the franchise.
