Heinz draws mixed reviews with new ketchup and mayo-flavored ice cream: ‘Wrong on so many levels’

There’s nothing like a big, freezing-cold scoop of ice cream (or several scoops, who are we kidding) on a hot summer day.

But just how far does that craving go? What if, for example, the ice cream was ketchup flavored? How about mayonnaise flavored?

That’s the question seemingly asked by Heinz, which recently introduced a line of condiment-flavored ice creams. The product, which is currently only available in the U.K., is aptly named Heinz Creamz.

The limited-edition dessert (??) apparently comes in five flavors, each modeled after one of the brand’s famous sauces. That includes ketchup, mayo, mustard, BBQ, “Salad Cream” and “Saucy Sauce” (which appears to resemble Thousand Island dressing).

“Don’t knock this sweet treat until you try it,” Heinz U.K. wrote on Twitter when announcing the product.

It’s unclear what the flavors taste like, or if they’ll eventually make their way to the U.S. Either way, social media users were quick to weigh in on the divisive food item.

“Wrong on so many levels. Think Heinz might have gone a little nuts during lockdown,” one Twitter user wrote.

“But why?” another asked.

Other users were less critical, with some admitting they were “intrigued” enough to give the ice cream a try. Thankfully, Heinz posted the recipe for each flavor on its website, meaning brave condiment connoisseurs everywhere can prepare the treat at home.

This isn’t the first time Heinz has divided the internet with a new product, either. In May, the brand debuted a limited-edition collaboration with Papa John’s U.K., which resulted in a baked bean-topped pizza.

The product was only available for one long weekend, but just like the ice cream, it sparked plenty of online arguments about what should — and shouldn’t — be allowed on a pizza.
