Since news broke that Justin Chambers, who plays Alex Karev on Grey’s Anatomy, was leaving the show, fans were dying for details about how it would happen. Bad news for every fan that was hoping they’d see Dr. Alex Karev one more time: Vanity Fair has learned that Chambers will not physically appear in the character’s final episode.

Since the show returned from the mid-season hiatus, Karev has been noticeably absent. The shown explained he was “in Iowa” with his mom. But then he stopped returning Jo’s calls and texts, and on last night’s episode, Jo admitted she thought Alex had officially left her, and she found out he never actually went to go visit his mom. Bad news for all involved.

Now, fans have no idea where he actually is/where he’s been, and it seems like if he’s not going to make a physical appearance in the next episode (which will be the last one for his character), the only option is death, right? The preview for it basically just lobbed together some old clips.

Fans on Reddit are not thrilled with it. One wrote, “Alex has been shown to stick around well past necessary and has assured Jo and Mer that he’ll be there for them to rely on. Yet, we’re just supposed to believe he’d give up and walk out spontaneously.”

It’ll be very interesting to see what happens next week. The only thing we know for sure is we won’t be physically seeing Dr. Karev ever again. Pour one out.
