As the 2020 election rapidly approaches, political candidates are currently out in full force with their respective campaigns; SNL’s cold open last night parodied last week’s CNN LGBTQ town hall, with all the front-runners tackling how they would focus on LGBTQ rights should they become president. On the roster were Cory Booker (Chris Redd), Pete Buttigieg (Colin Jost), Elizabeth Warren (Kate McKinnon), Julián Castro (Lin-Manuel Miranda), and Joe Biden (Woody Harrelson)—with a special cameo from Pose’s Billy Porter, who moderated the town hall as if it were a vogue ball.
Highlights from the skit included Buttigieg asking, “Why am I not winning this? I’m a veteran, I’m under the legal retirement age, and when I talk it makes sense.” There was also Miranda as Castro, who almost busted out in song with “Alexander Hamilton.” And then there was Warren, who earlier this week went viral in her response to a hypothetical voter who believes marriage should be between one man and one woman. (“Then just marry one woman—I’m cool with that,” she retorted. “Assuming you can find one.”) On SNL, McKinnon’s Warren continued with those zingers, elaborating with, “If someone doesn’t want to serve gay people at their small business, I bet that’s not the only thing that’s small.”
