Skol! Vikings exhibit makes Pittsburgh debut

PITTSBURGH – Carnegie Science Center will host "VIKINGS: Warriors of the North Sea," opening to the public Feb. 11.

The blockbuster exhibition from Denmark, featuring more than 140 Nordic artifacts, some never seen in the United States; includes jewelry, keys, weapons, silver hoards, brooches, clothing, and a full-size replica of a Viking ship and the Jelling Stone.

Through the exhibition, visitors will discover the truth about Vikings and dispel long-held stereotypes about its people, traditions and influence.   In addition to seeing rare artifacts, visitors can build a Viking ship using a touch screen, interact with a Norsemen through augmented reality, test the balance between the blade and the handle of a replica Viking sword, and play a digital version of a popular Viking strategy game that pre-dates chess, among other interactive experiences.

The Vikings Age (8th-11th centuries) was a time of colonization, conquest and plunder, but also a period when towns with trades, specialized crafts, professions, and communication networks were established, the North Shore, Pittsburgh science center's website says.
