Carson Bib Pant

The Carson Bib Pants are a favorite of Women's Health fitness editor, Jennifer Nied. The performance fabrics get a gold star, she says. The bibs, which are available in 11 colors, are designed with recycled fabrics, adjustable straps, and water-resistant materials. Additionally, they have thigh vents, adjustable waist tabs, and two exterior pockets to hold your belongings.

"They're size-inclusive and the brand is female-founded," adds Nied. "They look as good as they work on the mountain or off." Testers agree, adding that they're incredibly warm and functional. Users also appreciate the extra pocket in the chest area.

Rave Review: "These are the most flattering ski pants I've ever worn! I'm usually not a bib girl, but have found myself reaching for these over my regular ski pants since owning these. They're so flattering, but still have enough room for a mid layer under the bibs on colder days!"

Plus, it has a super durable inner ankle panel.

What are the different fabric types of ski pants?

When shopping for ski pants, you may hear terms like 'hardshell' or softshell.' These terms refer to the construction of the ski pants, and what kind of conditions or weather they're equipped to deal. There aren't specific fabrics each of these are made with (it differs across brands), but typically hardshell pants tend to be more rigid than those with softer shells.

Hardshell

Hardshell is the ideal option if you need waterproof or wind protection. However, it can make you sweaty or hot if you wear it in warmer climates or on warm days.

Hardshell with stretch

Hardshell with stretch doesn't feel as stiff as a standard hardshell pant. The stretch factor allows more airflow in, which makes it breathable. That also means that you may not be as protected from wind or water long-term.

Softshell

Unfortunately, this material isn't completely waterproof. But unlike hardshell, it has more breathability. In other words, you won't have to worry about getting too hot while doing the activities you love.

How to shop for ski pants

A quick Google search will pull up endless options of women's ski pants, but here's what to keep in mind while you're shopping:

Consider the climate.

Skiers should consider the kind of climate they will be skiing in, as well as their general activity levels, Dowdall says. "Climates with wind, wet snow, or high humidity will demand a hardshell pant with a high waterproof rating," Dowdall says.

A hardshell pant will typically offer more protection from intense elements than softshell ones. That said, softshell pants are the more breathable option, making them better for warmer climates. "Softshells utilize a water-resistant and breathable type of fabric ideal for high-intensity activities when the user is bound to break out in a sweat," Dowdall says.

Decide between bibs or pants.

"Bibs typically offer a bit more warmth and movement as they reduce bulk around the waistline," Dowdall says. They're also great for areas with lots of powder, as they'll keep your body dry even if you take a fall. Pants, on the other hand, offer a wider variety of special features, Dowdall notes. Those assets can include anything from increased insulation levels to extra snaps and zippers. Some pants even have the ability to attach to a jacket from the same brand for a super secure feel.

Test taking them on and off (or see what reviewers say!).

Last but not least, you'll want to see how easy it is to slide your ski pants on and off as you go to the restroom, Dowdall says. "I once had a pair of bibs with a zipper closure that circumnavigated the waist and it made drinking coffee in the morning unwise," Dowdall says. She could only ski with those pants while in a dehydrated state, she adds. "In my decades of skiing, I have found that bibs with a generous side zip offer the best convenience and usability when visiting the restroom," she advises.

What should you wear under your ski pants?

Ultimately, the weather will play a role in what you wear under your ski pants. For example, on warmer days, Nied opts for biker shorts, leaving the vents of her ski pants open.

"Most often a medium-weight pair of merino wool long underwear is the perfect sweat-wicking and temperature-regulating layer for winter resort days," Nied says. "I personally like to start a bit chilly in the morning and allow my body heat and activity to warm up my legs to avoid getting sweaty and overheated later in the day," she adds.

So, ultimately, it's really up to you to figure out what layers typically allow your body to feel and move the best. It's okay if that takes a little trial and error.

How should I care for and clean my ski pants?

Ski pants contain multitudes. They’re composed of several layers of varying fabrics like polyester, polyamide, polyurethane, or a blend of synthetic fibers “to achieve the warmth, waterproofness, and breathability/venting that is paramount when taking to the slopes,” Richardson says. Ski pants are usually composed of two layers, an outer one that's treated to be water-repellent and an inner breathable layer or insulation, Richardson explains.

Maintaining that durable water repellency (DWR) is critical because it protects you from the elements. But that maintenance isn’t easy. When skiing, dirt particles can infiltrate the fibers and compromise the integrity of the fabric. Yeah, it’s all very complex, so here are some tips for cleaning your snow pants.

Read the label.

It seems self-explanatory, but it’s important to read the care instructions found on the inside of your pants.

Use a detergent that supports technical fabric.

To optimize and reinforce the DWR, you have to wash and dry the pants, but household detergent is not the way to go. “Dirt attracts water and household detergents leave water-attracting (hydrophilic) residue, leading to fabric becoming wet or damp as time goes on,” Richardson says. “Technical outerwear cleaners for waterproof items clean water-repellent fabrics effectively and revitalize DWR by removing water-attractive dirt and detergent residues.” Richardson uses washes from Nikwax, for example.

Reapply DWR when needed.

If water droplets aren’t beading on the pants anymore, that’s a sign that it’s time to re-apply the agent, Richardson says. When you take the garment out of the washer, hang them up to let all of the excess water fall off. Close the zippers and spray DWR over the pants. Tumble dry at medium temperature for one hour.

Don’t use fabric softener.

“It will reduce the fabric surface tension and will have a negative effect on the fabric performance,” Richardson says. This is where technical washing products come in handy. If you can’t find technical washing products, look for detergents with no additives like perfume, foam, or softener, Richardson adds. You should be able to tumble dry, but again—it’s important to read the care instructions.

You don’t have to wash after every run.

“I wash my ski pants once to twice a season, and then one more time before storing them for the summer,” Richardson notes. That’s some good news for all the avid skiers out there.
